These “intelligent controllers” work as messengers to the Ductless Mini Split / Air Conditioner , telling it precisely what must be done to heat, cool, or dehumidify in the most efficient way possible, while never sacrificing your indoor comfort. Variable refrigerant flow technology (or VRF technology) allows the new Ductless Mini Split / Air Conditioner to react to changes in heating and cooling requirements by varying the flow of the refrigerant. Using a highly advanced inverter, the Ductless Mini Split / Air Conditioner unit can vary the speed of a 48 volt direct current compressor. PID then regulates the rotational speed of the compressors, precisely matching the amount of refrigerant being delivered to each zone. This technology, in fact, is not new. It was first developed in the 1950’s, and became popular in Europe.
However, as America becomes more and more “ductless,” this technology is picking up steam in the States. R-410A refrigerant was invented and patented by Honeywell in 1991. Unlike the alkyl halide refrigerants of the past, which contain bromine or chlorine, R-410A contains only fluorine. This refrigerant is a more environmentally responsible choice, as it does not contribute to ozone depletion. Ozone depleting refrigerants, such as R-22, are currently being phased out in favor of R410A. Ductless Mini Split / Air Conditioner utilize this newer refrigerant, which is now the preferred chemical for this application in Japan, Europe, and the United States.
